When clearing clutter, it is not all about just clearing stuff from your life. It can bring up emotions when you find something you had not seen in awhile and can spark a painful or even a good memory. It makes us stop and think. It can take hours to process these items one by one. My suggestion is to place those items in a box for the end of the clutter clearing session and process them together. They can look a little different when put together in a pile.
Remember, you may have put them aside or hidden them away somewhere for that very reason, to not deal with them. If you have an organizing professional helping you it may be best to share the stories around these item before giving them up. Either with a friend or spouse or your professional organizer, sort through those items and decide what needs to be done with them.
Sometimes no action is needed, in other cases there could be a specific action. Take the time you need with these items if they hold very specific memories. Sometimes they can inspire an impromptu phone call or a gift to a friend, or a new approach to a relationship. Or perhaps some grieving for a loss that was too painful to think about at the time when the loss occurred. Get the support you need to deal with these items and move them on. It is often not the items themselves, but the memory attached to it. Seek professional counseling when the feelings are too difficult to process.
